More Festivals and Brewery Nights
Following on from the Globe event (see below), we will be at the West Bridgford Monarchs HC Beer Festival the following weekend from Feb 2 to Feb 4. For the beer list see www.wbhockey.co.uk. There is then a bit of a breather, followed by the Hucknall Beer Festival at the John Godber Centre from Feb 16 to 18 and a Magpie event at the William Peverel in Bulwell for a week from Feb 18. This involves 7 of our beers and will include a Meet the Brewer event on Monday, Feb 20. Finally (for now) we are also doing a Meet the brewer at the Poppy and Pint in Lady Bay when there will be 4 Magpie beers on as well as the normal excellent range from Castle rock and other guests. Hope to see lots of you at one or all of these events!
Bottles!
Regular customers will know that we are doing our bit for the environment by reusing traditional shaped, brown, pint bottles for our bottled beers - doing this also helps keep our costs down! We are now running short of bottles, mainly because demand has stayed so high, so we are asking anyone reading this item to help us out either by returning your used Magpie bottles to the shop where you bought them or by delivering suitable empties to the brewery. Thanks in anticipation.
Brewery Night
We are doing a brewery night at the Globe on Wednesday, Feb 1st. This is the first brewery night for some time and there will be one on the first Wednesday of the month. Paul tells us that there will be samosas provided and special offers on Magpie beers. We will be supplying our new beer, Raven Stout, for the occasion along with Thieving Rogue and a couple of other, yet to be decided, Magpie ales. Hope to see you there.
New recipes section, cooking with Magpie ales
Check out our new feature on the right hand menu! Recipes for cooking using Magpie ales. We're starting off with the three popular samples we were handing out at the Melton road Christmas market, Porter ginger bread, porter fruit cake and the simple beer bread. We will slowly be adding to these recipes as our brewer experiments in the kitchen matching the best Magpie real ales to fun recipes for you to try yourselves. So have a look and get cooking.
British hops doing well
This week we took a look at where one of our ingredients is produced by taking a walk around a hop farm. We also listened to encouraging talks about increasing land areas for growing hops and new intense aroma varieties being developed here in the UK. Of couse we will endeavour to get our hands on some as they become available! We also collected some fresh green hops of first gold which we have now brewed into an as yet unnamed fresh hopped beer! get your orders in as it will be limited stock!
Grantham Canal Beer Mats
Together with Newby Wyke, Oldershaws and Nottingham brewery, we have sponsored a set of beer mats which depict scenes on the canal. Full sets of the mats, which are highly collectable - if you are a beer mat collector, that is - are available from the society via its website, www.granthamcanal.com.
Frequently Asked Questions!
Two questions often arise in conversation with beer drinkers. the answers are as follows: 1 We are proud to use only British grown hops and malt. 2 All our bottled beers are vegetarian/vegan. We use isinglass finings in our cask beers which means that they are not.
